Original Hamilton cast members Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Jasmine Cephas Jones, who played the Schuyler Sisters in the hit Broadway musical, sang “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl LI on Sunday.
All three actresses have since left the production, but before the New England Patriots faced off against the Atlanta Falcons, they reunited to help kick off the game. Shortly after the news broke that the Broadway stars would make a Super Bowl appearance, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda tweeted a screenshot of himself chatting with them on Facetime. He captioned the photo, “When you FaceTime your friends from [the UK] because they’re practicing their SONG FOR THE SUPERBOWL (WHAT?!).”
The Hamilton stars join other music performers at this year’s Super Bowl, such as Lady Gaga, who will be headlining the halftime show. Luke Bryan will also be singing the national anthem directly following Soo, Goldsberry and Jones’s appearance. “America the Beautiful” has been sung eight other times prior to the Super Bowl, starting with Vicki Carr in 1977. Jennifer Hudson and a group of children from Newtown, Connecticut most recently sang the song in 2013.
