Every year, the Oxford University Press hosts an empowering initiative: the selection of the Children’s Word of the Year, driven entirely by young voices. In 2024, over 6,000 children between the ages of six and fourteen joined forces to choose a word that resonates deeply with their experiences and aspirations.
The selection process is inclusive and engaging. The children start by nominating their top three words, from which, through a collaborative effort, the ultimate Word of the Year is chosen. Last year's selection was "Climate Change," reflecting their environmental concerns.
This year, they've chosen "Kindness." One participant shared, "You never truly know what someone else is going through, so it is important to be kind to everyone you meet. You also never know how much your kindness could help someone." This profound insight underscores the compassion and empathy inherent in today’s youth, revealing that despite the challenges they face, their capacity for kindness remains undiminished.
